Tell participants that today we are going to play a game with a deck of cards to discuss our feelings.
Important Note About Emotional Safety: Be an active listener during this process. Pay attention to red flags that could indicate safety issues. Be sure to follow your Club’s policy for mandated reporting if a youth discloses anything related to abuse, neglect or threats to their personal safety.
Explain that participants will take turns drawing cards, and based on the suit of the card they draw, they can pick from two topics to share something.
Discuss the topics while writing them on a whiteboard or flipchart paper:
Hearts = Something you felt OR Something that brings/sustains life
Diamonds = Cold, hard facts OR Something that changed over time
Clubs = Something you thought OR Something that brings luck
Spades = Something we could dig deeper into OR Barriers/challenges
Ask if anyone has any questions about how to play.
Drop a deck of cards into the middle or the circle.
Select a volunteer to go first with:
Drawing a card
Selecting from the two topics
Sharing something
Direct the group to continue with each person in the circle, starting with the person to the right of the volunteer who went first.
Continue game play until everyone had a chance to share.
