Use this fun movement experience to boost energy and listening skills.
This can also be considered a dance experience as youth experiment with movement, tempo and levels.
Step 1
- Ask youth to find a partner. If there is an odd number, you can participate or make a group of three.
- Say, “We’re going to take turns moving based on what type of music you are hearing. When the music starts, listen to it and dance. When I say, ‘FREEZE!’ the dancer will stop moving and stay frozen while their partner takes a turn to dance and move around them.”
- Ask youth to identify who will move first in their partnership.
- Ask all youth who are moving first to raise their hands. There should be one person in each partnership.
Step 2
- Play the first selected song.
- Encourage youth to add in turns, jumps, low and high movements and to listen to the music.
- Wait about 15-30 seconds.
- Say, “FREEZE!” and remind youth that the first dancer should stay frozen while the second dancer moves.
- Wait about 15-30 seconds.
- Say, “FREEZE!” and remind youth that the second dancer should stay frozen while the first dancer moves.
- Encourage youth to watch their partner and interact with them through movements and gestures while it’s their turn to move.
- Change the song often to give youth a variety of music to move to. You don’t need to play a whole song.
- Repeat the experience for as long as time allows or move on to the next technique
