- Direct youth to scatter about in an open area.
- Say, “Today we are going to play a game called Cluster.”
- Ask, “Has anyone ever played this before?”
- Say, “When I call out a number, you need to cluster together to form groups with that number of people. For example, if I say, ‘Four!’ you need to group up with three other people. Whoever is left standing without a group is out!”
Variation: Instead of calling out a number, clusters can be formed according to the same shoe size, sock or eye color, etc.
- Ask, “Does anyone have any questions about how to play?”
- Exclaim, “Ready? Begin! The first number is Three!”
- Watch as youth form groups of three.
- Ask anyone who cannot join a group to join you in a line at the front of the room.
- Instruct everyone grouped together to scatter throughout the room.
- Continue game play by calling numbers, allowing youth to group up, and gathering leftover players to remain at the front of the room until just three players are left.
- Say, “Congratulations! There are only three players left.
- Ask, “Are you ready to play one more round?”
- Exclaim, “Two!”
- Congratulate the two players who formed a pair, and instruct the remaining player to join everyone else at the front of the room.
- Instruct youth to find a seat.
- Ask youth the following questions to reflect on their time together:
- What did you enjoy about this activity?
- Would you enjoy playing this game again in the future? Why? Why Not?
- If you could make changes to this game, what would you change?
