Youth create a group poem about important aspects of who they are.
This can also be a spoken work experience as you practice with poetry.
Step 1
- Say, “We’re going to create a group poem based on some of the things that make us who we are. We will write five lines in our poems that all start with, ‘We are.’”
- Read the prompts aloud.
- Ask youth if they have any questions before they begin.
Step 2
- Help youth identify the answers to each prompt as a group.
- Write their answers on a separate line, for example:
- We are silly, happy, thoughtful
- We are art time
- We are cooking, playing at the park, making new friends
- We are funny, kind, tired, cool
- We are Edgewood
- Support youth with any questions they have about the prompts.
- Read the group poem aloud to youth.
Step 3 (Optional)
- Allow youth time to create their personal identity poem using the same prompts.
