Instructions
Step 1
- Identify an area for the stage.
- Ask youth to form a line facing the stage.
- Say, “We’re all actors today. For this game we’re going to start with one actor on stage who will act out something simple like brushing their teeth or walking their dog. The next actor will join the scene and do the same action. For example, if the person on stage is walking a dog, the new actor will walk a dog also. The new actor will say, ‘What are you doing?’ and the first actor will respond by saying something they aren’t doing. For example, if they are riding a bike they would respond with, ‘I’m surfing a wave.’”
- After the youth says their new action, they should start doing it.
- Ask youth if they have any questions.
Step 2
- Ask if there are any volunteers who would like to be the first actor.
- Ask this person if they have an idea of something to act out.
- If youth need an idea for what to do, share some examples such as:
- Riding a bike
- Blowing bubbles
- Walking on a balance beam
- Washing the dishes
- Dancing
- Listening to music on headphones
- Allow the first youth to begin the scene.
Step 3
- After a few moments, prompt the next youth in line to join the scene.
- Remind youth to join the scene and do the same action as the first actor and then ask them, “What are you doing?”
- Support the first actor as needed to respond with a new action, such as, “I’m washing an elephant.”
- Remind youth they can use their imagination to come up with fun new actions.
- Allow the new actor to start that new action.
- Continue to prompt youth to join the scene until everyone has had a chance to act.
