A large, empty paper towel roll or a similar object that could represent a variety of different things.
Instructions
Step 1
Ask youth to form a circle.
Show youth the object you have selected and say, “This (e.g., paper towel roll) can be many different things other than what it is. We’re going pretend it is many different things by pantomiming, which means acting without words. We will only use gestures and expressions. We will all guess out loud and when we have guessed correctly, the actor will hand the object to the next actor. If you don’t have an idea in mind, you can say, ‘Pass.’”
Give an example (e.g., act like your object is a toothbrush).
Remind youth that they should act out the scene using only gestures and expressions. They shouldn’t use words or sounds.
Step 2
Ask for a volunteer who has an idea for the object.
Select and invite the first volunteer to start acting with the object.
Allow youth to guess out loud. After the object has been guessed, the person holding it should pass it to the person on their left.
Remind youth not to repeat an idea that has already been mentioned.
Allow all youth who want to participate to have a turn. This could go on for multiple rounds, depending on interest.
Optional: Introduce a new object (such as a foam noodle or something similar) and repeat the game.
